Disaster in Rio Grande do Sul!

The news has barely registered here in the UK but we at Go Brazil we would like to draw attention to the devastating flooding which is currently affecting Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil’s southernmost state.

More than 500,000 inhabitants have been displaced, sadly many have died or are still missing, while much of the local infrastructure has been destroyed. Even the airport at Porto Alegre, the state capital, has been underwater for a week..

Incredibly, this is the fourth serious ‘weather event’ in RS within the last nine months: a cyclone and two other large scale floods have also been recorded over the period.

Nor have the region’s wineries and vineyards escaped: at least 250 hectares of vines are reported destroyed around Bento Gonçalves (Brazil’s ‘wine capital’) but it could be weeks until a full assessment is possible.

It is heartening, however, to hear of the solidarity being shown among the close-knit winemaking community. For our part, Go Brazil’s commitment to its suppliers continues undimmed, while UK consumers wishing to show support might consider purchasing a bottle or two of Brazilian wine – whatever the source.
