Barbara Eliodora Léger Syrah 2025

£17.49

A fabulous new addition to the Go Brazil range – and one of two brand news unoaked Syrahs! Taking its cue from the French for ‘light’, this is indeed a young, bright and light-bodied red wine which makes for perfect spring/summer drinking. Available now!

It’s also one of three wines which we are sourcing directly from the Barbara Eliodora winery, a completely new addition to our stable of Brazilian suppliers. The winery sits at 500m altitude in the southwesterly hills of Minais Gerais, an inland state neighbouring both Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, which exemplifies the most exciting and fastest developing trend in Brazilian winemaking: that of the ‘winter’ harvest*. In summary, grapes are picked in late July/early August, when the weather is generally dry and cold and, importantly, when there is a wide variation in day-night (‘diurnal’) temperatures.

An inviting nose suggests ripe red fruits, hints of dried herbs and perhaps some floral notes. Supple and easy-drinking, with just a sprinkle of spice, this is a Syrah that can be enjoyed on its own or served with pizza, pasta, risottos, chicken and lighter red meat dishes. Alcohol is low for this grape variety – just 12% Abv.

*unlike in the most southerly of Brazil’s states, a ‘normal’ harvest (between January-March) would be not be possible here: the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and others sit within the Tropics, where summer rains fall heavily in the first three months of the year and temperatures can be extremely high. A second pruning of the vines ensures that grapes are ready to harvest in the local winter months, June-August.
