Guaspari Vista da Serra Syrah 2018

£45.99

A 100% Syrah (Shiraz), showing a deep ruby colour, with aromas of dried herbs, cloves and forest fruits to the fore. Palate is rich, concentrated and savoury.

Full bodied, 14% Abv, this is a powerful, complex and exceptionally well balanced wine. It was aged in new French barriques for 17 months, then rested in bottle for 9 months prior to release. Reminiscent of an Old World Syrah!

The previous 2017 vintage was awarded 95 points by Decanter and featured on the magazine’s front cover (Oct 2020). We believe this is a ‘first’ for any Brazilian wine: a well deserved and important endorsement not only of the Guaspari winery but of Brazilian wines generally. The 2015 vintage of Vista da Serra also scored 95 points in Decanter and the 2016 was awarded 93 pts, demonstrating that it is quite simply one of Brazil’s finest reds.

Description

Launched for the first time in the UK in November 2019, Guaspari is a young, multi award-winning winery located on the site of an old coffee plantation in the highlands of São Paulo state.

Despite the vineyard’s high altitude (900-1300m), it is usually too hot and/or wet to harvest during February or March, the months when the harvest would typically occur in the more southerly Serra Gaúcha hills.

To avoid this scenario, an additional pruning of the vines takes place, thus delaying the harvest until the cooler and drier winter months of July and August, and allowing the grapes to ripen more slowly before they reach maturity. Read Decanter review (Oct 20):
