Pizzato PP Semillon 2021

£19.99

Now the third vintage of this wine we have imported – but it remains the only Brazilian Semillon available in the UK (and we understand in Brazil too)!

Highly unusual too, in that it was partially aged for 7-8 months in barrels made of both acacia and oak (the staves are oak, the heads acacia), with just 5550 bottles being produced.

Subtle and complex, this is a gastronomic style of wine which is best enjoyed with food – see suggestions below – and likely to appeal most to wine enthusiasts, educators and budding sommeliers.

Decanter has twice awarded this wine 92 points: most recently for the 2021 vintage (Sept 2023) and also in October 2020 when the 2018 vintage was recommended as one of ‘South America’s 12 Top Whites to try’ – and the only Brazilian white to feature!

Deep gold-green in colour, it is medium bodied and multi-layered, showing notes of white flowers, camomile, green herbs and some tropical fruits, with gently toasty overtones. A touch savoury, it has excellent acidity and has great balance.

Description

Deep straw yellow in colour, the wine is complex, with notes of melon, camomile and dried fruits, finished with a lick of buttery vanilla or ‘crème brûlée’. Beautifully textured and weighted, this Semillon is fresh, dry and has a persistent finish. 12% Abv.

Decanter highlights the wine’s ‘enticing and complex aromas of ripe yellow fruits, wild flowers, nutty notes and sweet spices..palate is harmonious, with balancing freshness, good concentration of beautifully ripe yellow fruits, nuts and savoury complexity..’.

Serve well chilled on its own or with salads, canapés, seafood risottos, ham, mushroom or chicken dishes.

Pizzato is one of Go Brazil’s longest standing suppliers, a winery whose Italian immigrant founder arrived in Brazil in the late 1880’s and which latterly produces wines of a consistently high standard. While winemaker Flavio is perhaps best known for his reds, he also makes some great whites – not least his ‘Legno’ oaked Chardonnay (whose 2018 vintage scored 93 points in Decanter’s October 2019 edition), for example.

We are delighted therefore to have introduced Flavio’s ‘PP Semillon’, a French varietal which his father Plinio Pizzato experimented with in the 1960’s, and which the family has now resurrected with vines planted only in 2012.

Well known Glasgow-based wine critic Tom Cannavan selected this Semillon as his  ‘Wine of the Week’ (w/c 16/03/20). Read his tasting note here: Semillon
