This a mature, high quality and full bodied 100% Cab Sav, from one of Brazil’s leading wineries, established in 1880. Aged in American oak barrels for 12 months, this example shows varietal aromas of ripe blackcurrant, with hints of cedar and spice, also now a touch yeasty and ‘meaty’!

Robust and well structured, it makes a great match for roasted or grilled meats, casseroles, curries, spicy pasta dishes or well flavoured hard cheeses.

ABV: 13.5%

APPEARANCE: Deep garnet with slight purple tinge; some signs of ageing on rim

AROMAS: Attractive blend of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant; oaky, with overtones of cedar and eucalyptus

TASTE: Intense concentration of warm dark, ripe fruits with a fresh, lifted acidity, and well integrated oak. Some meaty or yeasty flavours have developed in what is a mature wine; traces of vanilla from US oak barrel ageing are also apparent. Tannins are robust but rounded, while finish is pleasantly lingering

FOOD PAIRING: Best enjoyed with well flavoured red meat dishes, especially lamb, beef, game or venison, stews and casseroles, curried and spiced dishes, or mature cheeses

OVERALL: Just 1400 bottles produced, this is a powerful and exuberant red, drinking very well now but will keep for another 2-3 years

The Pizzato winery is well known for its red wines and in particular for their structure and longevity. It is no coincidence that winemaker Flavio’s reds, from his ‘Gran Reserva’ range through to his ‘Fausto’ branded second line, are all barrel-aged to a greater or lesser extent. Julia Harding MW awarded this Cab Sauv 17/20 in Jancis Robinson’s ‘Purple Pages’, while Decanter magazine gave it a 4 star rating.
