Goodbye January, hello February..

Yes, it’s a Leap Year but Valentine’s Day is still on Feb 14th – this year falling on (Ash) Wednesday, also the last day of Rio’s official carnival celebrations!

With love in the air, and hopefully some early spring warmth too, here are a few suggestions for wines to share with your nearest and dearest:

Familia Geisse Blanc de Blanc 2020 (Traditional Method)

A superb sparkler from the highly regarded Familia Geisse winery, this a complex, mature Brut fizz. Very fresh, well rounded and a tad floral on the nose, it shows doughy/brioche notes, citrus and green apple. £26.99 (Decanter 92-94 pts.).

Amadeu Brut Rosé 2021 (Traditional Method)

From the same Geisse winery as the above, this is a beautifully presented pink sparkler produced entirely from Pinot Noir grapes. With plentiful bubbles and a generous mousse, it has notes of ripe summer fruits, especially strawberry and red cherry. Light bodied, dry to off-dry and with a marked freshness, this is hard not to like! £19.99.

Don Guerino Reserva Pinot Noir 2021

Using 100% Pinot Noir grapes but this time making a still wine, this is a complex, medium weight red, dry and with aromas of herbaceous, hedgerow fruit and perhaps a touch of ‘earthiness’. It was rested briefly in used barrels, so you may notice some hints of vanilla and/or spice. Drinking very well now! Currently on offer @ £14.49 (RRP £15).

Campos de Cima Três Bocas Branco 2022

A sophisticated three grape blend, featuring Alvarinho & Arinto (from Portugal) and Assyrtiko (Greece). Very dry, with a racing acidity, melon and citrus notes show on the nose, while the palate is lean with a pronounced mineral – almost saline – character. Drink well chilled as an aperitif or serve with seafood and white fish dishes. £15.99 (Decanter 91 pts).
